Why The Big Fuss Over Links?

If you have spent any time researching search engine optimisation, you no doubt would have heard about how important it is to get links pointing towards your website.  Gone are the days when all you had to do is have a smoothly optimised website and expect to sail up the rankings and into the sunset. There is a certain amount of offpage optimisation that needs to go into your SEO plan. By this I mean you need to make sure you are continuously trying to get links to your page.

But why are links so important?

Well think of a link to your website as a vote. You have something SO worthwhile on your website/blog that someone else feels compelled to link to it. This means that your web page ads value to the web. There are billions and billions of webpages out there and heaps of them have worthless, old or outdated content. Search engines like Google are on a mission to get rid of all the rubbish and only give people good and relevant content. So you can see why this system is so important. This ‘voting system’ allows search engines to measure the worthiness of any given web page. This is not the only factor influencing your web pages rankings, but it is a very important one!
