Its All In The Domain Name
Your domain name is a very important aspect of your search engine optimisation success and it is a step that many people seem to over look. The biggest problem here is that many businesses face a dilema: do I get mycompany.com/co.uk/whatever or do I get keyword.com? Well it’s six of one, half a dozen of the other really. I think for branding purposes it is essential to get mycompany.whatever, then it is up to you to get proper SEO work done on it.
So, lets have a look at a new site example.
Let’s say we are starting a business where we want to sell only white tennis shoes. I start off by using the google keyword tool and finding out whether there are searches for white tennis shoes.
The pic is a little blurry, but if you look close enough you see that white tennis shoes has a monthly search volume of 8,800. Thats some pretty good traffic if you can get to the top of Google for that phrase.
Next we are going to look for a domain that will be as close to those three words as possible.
For this I use domain.com. You can use any domain name registration website that you want, I just find domain.com easy to get alternate ideas. And here are the good results:
As you can see whitetennisshoes.com is taken, BUT the .net extension is available! Thats great new for us because generally .com, .net and .org are great extensions to register.
So thats a little tutorial on how to go about choosing the right domain name purely for SEO purposes.
